In 1919, A.N.Subbarao envisioned and established Kalamandira in Bengaluru, a first of its kind non- governmental art school, in the Princely State of Mysore. He believed that for being self- reliant, freedom was the path and art should garner the respect it deserved as a sustainable profession. From 1919 to 2019, both during the pre-independence and post- independence periods, Kalamandira has contributed immensely to the field of art education and achieved a pride of place in the art world of Karnataka. Kalamandira –A.N.Subbarao, Paradigms and Beyond is a retrospective narrative and biographical documentation of A.N.Subbarao and Kalamandira with some rare photographs, illustrations and timeline of events. It traces the life of a pioneering visionary, his perception of art education, struggle, achievements and contribution in the establishment of Kalamandira. The book also presents the continuation, contribution and commitment of Kalamandira School of Art to the field of fine art and allied arts in later years.
